Injection Guide
Learn how to safely prepare and administer your
subcutaneous
injection by following this step-by-step guide.
Gather your supplies
Before beginning, set up a clean, well-lit workspace with:
Medication vial
Verify the name and expiration date.
Insulin syringe
Standard orange-capped 100-unit (1 mL) syringe.
Alcohol prep pads
For sanitizing the vial and injection site.
Sharps container
For immediate, safe disposal of used needles.
Preparation & hygiene
Wash hands
With warm water and soap; dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
Get comfortable
Sit in a relaxed position.
Check medication
Inspect the liquid for unusual cloudiness or particulates (unless your provider has told you otherwise).
Prepare the dosage
Sanitize
Remove the plastic flip-cap, wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab, and let it air-dry.
Equalize pressure
Draw air into the syringe by pulling the plunger to your prescribed unit mark (e.g., a 10-unit dose → pull to the 10 line).
Inject air
Insert the needle through the center of the rubber stopper and depress the plunger to push the air into the vial.
Draw medication
Invert the vial and syringe (vial on top) and make sure the needle tip stays submerged in the liquid.
Remove bubbles
Pull the plunger slightly past your dose, tap the syringe to float air bubbles to the top, then depress exactly to your prescribed unit line.
Withdraw
Carefully remove the needle from the vial.
Select your injection site
Rotate sites every dose for better absorption and less discomfort.
Abdomen
At least two inches from the navel in any direction. Some patients notice mild localized irritation here.
Thighs
Front or outer portion. Avoid the inner thigh — it's more sensitive and vascular.
Outer arms
Back/outer upper arm (triceps). A good option if you have assistance.
Glutes
Upper-middle gluteal area, 1–2 inches below the waistline.
Administer
Cleanse
Swab the site with alcohol and let it dry completely.
Pinch
Gently pinch a one-inch fold of skin to isolate the fatty tissue.
Inject
Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle with a quick, firm motion.
Deliver
Release the skin fold and slowly depress the plunger until the full dose is in.
Withdraw
Remove the needle at the same angle. If spotting occurs, press a clean swab to the site (don't rub).
Dispose
Place the used syringe immediately into your sharps container.
Pro-tips for a better experience
Temperature control
If you feel a slight sting, let the filled syringe sit 5–10 minutes to reach room temperature before injecting.
Site rotation
Never inject the exact same spot twice in a row; rotating prevents skin thickening (lipohypertrophy).
The 90-degree rule
Most subcutaneous needles are short enough that a direct 90-degree entry is the safest and least painful way to reach the fat layer.
